Wilderness (11 September 2015) – The second Thousand Sensations Crafted Beer and Food Festival to be presented at Wilderness Hotel on 18 and 19 September promises to be loads of fun for lovers of crafted beer and good food.
There will be numerous types of crafted beer brewed by at least two dozen brewers to taste, as well as delicious food prepared by at least 12 handpicked chefs. In addition, a knowledgeable panel of crafted beer specialists will talk you through pairings of different beers and food.
Alewijn Dippenaar, owner of Thousand Sensations and organiser of the festival, will facilitate beer and food pairings at seven presentations of about an hour in duration on Friday and Saturday.
“The aim of the pairings is to create awareness of the brewing process of crafted beer, the brewers involved in the industry and where they are based,” says Dippenaar.
“We want to establish a culture that crafted beer can be enjoyed not only before a meal, but can accompany all the dishes throughout a meal in the same way wine does.”
These pairings will be hosted by a panel of experts on crafted beer. Holger Meier, Jacques van Zyl and Lucy Corne, authors of South African books on crafted beer, will each take part in consecutive pairings on both days, starting at 17:00 – 18:00 on Friday, and at 14:00 – 15:00 on Saturday. Popular South African author Johan Bakkes will host the first pairing at 13:00 – 14:00 on Saturday. Bakkes will be joined by Dr Melanie Nieuwoudt of Cederbrew, who specializes in the fermentation process of beer.
In addition, each pairing will host one of seven brewers from seven crafted beer breweries taking part in the festival. Some of the breweries who have confirmed that they will be taking part in the pairings include, among others, Mitchells, Glenhoff, Wild Clover, Innis & Gunn, Robertson, Cederbrew, Darling, Devils Peak and Boston, as well as others who have not been finalised.
During each pairing four different types of beer will be paired with four different types of food.
Food will be provided by, among others, Francois Ferreira Academy, BeeJuice Cafe, Hetta’s Home Food, Wilderness Hotel, Thousand Sensations Test Kitchen, Schwaben, Patato Rosti en Fiela Vis.
Pairing sessions will last some 45 to 60 minutes. At the beginning of each session each member of the panel will have an opportunity to introduce themselves and say something about their involvement with the crafted beer industry.
With Dippenaar facilitating the discussion, the panel will answer questions asked by the audience. During the actual pairing four types of beer will be paired with four types of food, and the panel will discuss the particular beer, with Dippenaar facilitating questions.
